Diocesan Synod

From the 1st to the 2nd May, 2016 at Majodi, the Diocesan Synod, a gathering of 370, comprising of the Bishop, the Emeriti, clergy, religious & leaders of parishes and ministries was convened. The Diocesan Synod was a follow up to the Diocesan Survey exercise; and a preparation for the upcoming PMPC IV, that will occur in Majodi from October 2nd-5th. The above was an “ecclesial event”, inspired by the Holy Spirit. Here, we journeyed, reflected, discerned and discovered together “how God was and is guiding the people” and “in what way the Church can serve God’s people better”. The spirit of MJD Synod was “listen to what the Holy Spirit is saying to the churches.” (Rev 2:1-3:22)

The Holy Year of Mercy invites all of us to reflect on the relationship between communication and mercy. The Church, in union with Christ, the living incarnation of the Father of Mercies, is called to practise mercy as the distinctive trait of all that she is and does. What we say and how we say it, our every word and gesture, ought to express God’s compassion, tenderness and forgiveness for all. Love, by its nature, is communication; it leads to openness and sharing. If our hearts and actions are inspired by charity, by divine love, then our communication will be touched by God’s own power.

We are disheartened by Datuk Seri Hadi Awang’s provocative statement as it is simply false and untrue. Since the days when Christian missionaries first came to Sabah up until today, we have not witnessed nor heard of any incidences of bribery or inducements of any form to lure our people to convert into Christianity. It is obvious that Datuk Seri Hadi Awang’s statement reflects his ignorance of the central tenets of Christianity. Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour came to offer the free gift of salvation (Ephesians 2:8). Further He commanded us not to “lay up for yourselves treasures on earth…but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.” (Matthew 6:19,20) The Christian pioneering missionaries in both Sabah and Sarawak made huge personal sacrifices and endured hardships because they heeded the call of Matthew 5:16, which commands every Christian thus: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

May the spirit of "Sehati Sejiwa" inspire the leaders of our nation and all its people of diverse races and cultures to work selflessly in resolving the nation's challenges, and to strive with steadfast will to make Malaysia a truly united and harmonious nation, guided by the principles of the Rukun Negara and safeguarded by the sacrosanctity of our Federal Constitution.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As Christians, we cannot stand by the road side and watch things go by. We are in an unprecedented moment in our Malaysian history where all forms of decency, respect, integrity, honesty and transparency have all been pushed aside.

What prevails is unaccountability, falsehood and fear that is being promoted. Corruption and disrespect for the Federal Constitution are being trampled upon by people who are in leadership in our government. We are sliding down the slope of morality and and not acting according to principles that our country has been upholding.

As Malaysian Christians, we have to respond.

The recent public statement by Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail giving his reasons for not prosecuting Datuk Ibrahim Ali for sedition has not in any way allayed the discontent of many people, including a Cabinet minister.


Mencari Khazanah

Siapakah yang boleh membuat keputusan atau menjamin ketulenan tafsiran yang betul bagi Kitab Suci? Sepanjang abad, orang-orang dari pelbagai mazhab Kristian dan agama bahkan juga para ateis telah menawarkan banyak versi tafsiran Kitab Suci. Adakah tafsiran Kitab Suci yang merupakan perkara peribadi berdasarkan inspirasi peribadi dan mendakwa ia sebagai “mesej yang diilhamkan oleh Roh Kudus” atau sebagai “mesej daripada Kristus sendiri”? Haruskah Kitab Suci dan tafsirannya “dikemaskinikan”, “ditulis semula” atau “ditafsirkan semula” mengikut keadaan perubahan moden, selaras dengan pemikiran manusia kontemporari bagi menjadikannya “relevan” dan “boleh diterima” kepada kepelbagaian gaya dan keperluan kehidupan manusia? Adakah tafsiran merupakan hal-hal Gnostisisme atau relativisme atau skolastikisme atau sekularisasi atau subjektivisme? Sebagai jawapannya, mesej Hari Minggu Kitab Suci 2013 menjelaskan “PENGERTIAN KITAB SUCI DALAM TAFSIRAN”.
